Immigration Search

British Guiana received about 238,979 Indians during the Indentureship scheme period. The 2002 census found that 43.5% of Guyana’s population is descended from them. One of the most important collections at the national archives, this set of documents helps us comprehend the profound effects of Indian indentureship on the history and culture of modern-day Guyana.
The documents kept at the NAG provide insight into the individuals who travelled and their offspring. The NAG is proud of its Ship Registers (358 shiploads), Immigrant Certificates (1865-1917), which provide a wealth of information about each immigrant, including their name, father’s name, caste, village of origin, and more; the Register of Births; the Annual Reports of the Immigration Agent General; the Immigration Department: Correspondence; the Immigration Department: Letter books, etc.

This collection has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register as documentary heritage of world significance and outstanding universal value, along with similar records from Fiji, Suriname, and Trinidad.
